here is my very short story:
The magic cost him. He felt it each and every time. But how could he deny her, well, anything? She had always owned his heart.
“She will be your downfall” his mentor had told him nearly every week of his training. And he knew it was truth. But the tugs on his heart and thoughts and loins urged him to scoff at the counsel and he became deeper and deeper entwined with her.
It started when he noticed that he was thinking her thoughts and finishing her sentences much to her delight. Every time she smiled and laughed when it seemed he could guess her random thoughts he felt, in his very blood, a tiny influx of power, magic if you will. As their involvement deepened the magic between them grew steadily. Their breathing became synchronized, their heart beats identical and the very lines that separated them began to blur for him.
One afternoon while they were tangled in each other’s embrace he felt the merging. It was, as if they were in one space. Completely separate and yet occupying only one space. Breathless, they emerged laughing and wondering at the completeness of their union. He knew after that first time that he could loose himself in her. The completeness of their merging had cost him dearly. Although it didn’t show, he was significantly weaker.
She hungered to merge with him again and even though he feared for himself, how could he deny her such pleasure? Each time they merged he became more and more a servant, a slave to her driving need. And, although he was too weak to notice, he could no longer hear her thoughts. The day he was knighted and parading around in his armor for the first time, he thought the armor could help him shield himself from her.
Thinking himself immune to the power of the merge, he agreed to ride with her to the field. She insisted he stay in his armor. When he dismounted and she reached to touch his face, he lost himself so swiftly to the merge he fell to the earth and as he fell, he heard her laugh in delight as she wrenched out of him feeling the power in her blood.
